Cost-effective and sustainable process energy supply for A&L/GEPRO provided by a wood-fired cogeneration plant operated by the HoSt Group

The project contributes directly to the industrial energy transition, as it completely replaces our existing lignite-fired power plant and two gas-fired boilers. The facility, which is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2027, represents a key step for A&L and GEPRO toward achieving a self-sufficient and sustainable energy supply for the Diepholz site. Furthermore, the project demonstrates that the industrial energy transition is feasible in practice. Fossil fuel-based heat and power supply is being replaced by reliable and cost-effective renewable energy.

Economic and Environmental Sustainability

The project demonstrates that phasing out fossil fuels can be an economically viable business model—provided the technology and partners are a good fit. Given rising CO₂ prices and the continued volatility of fossil fuel costs, this enables stable energy prices in the long term. It thus offers not only financial benefits and predictability but also clear environmental advantages.

Locally available industrial wood waste serves as fuel—a true circular solution that meets both strict EU emissions standards and the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). The plant marks the transition from fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas to competitive, CO₂-neutral waste streams. This saves approximately 65,000 tons of CO₂ annually and underscores our goal of always operating within circular systems.
